Benjamin H. Cohey age 79, passed peacefully on December 22, 2021, at his home in Cordova, MD surrounded by his family.
Benjamin was born in Ridgely, MD on September 27, 1942, to the late Benjamin O. Cohey and Mary M. Cohey (Hollingsworth). He was raised in St. Michaels, MD and then moved to Queenstown, MD where he graduated from Centreville High School in 1960. Benjamin was enlisted in the Unites States Marine Corp from 1960-1964. Upon completing his service, Benjamin became one of Maryland’s finest and joined the Maryland State Police academy in Pikesville, MD on January 3, 1966. His career spanned over 33 years when he retired as 1st Lieutenant from the MSP Centreville Barrack on July 1, 1999, then was appointed as the Chief of Police for the Centreville Police Department from November 1999- April 2005. Ben will always be remembered for his firm but fair leadership, he never forgot where he started in his career.
Benjamin is survived by his wife of over 54 years, Barbara Gladys Cohey (Shaffer). His daughter, Kelley Anne Cohey, preceded him in death. His sons and daughter, Bart M. Cohey and wife Penny, Benjamin S. Cohey and wife Donna, Matthey C. Cohey, and Kimberly D. Michael and her husband Aaron, also survive him. His grandchildren, Zachary, Paige, Rebecca, and Christopher also survive him.
A Celebration of Life and repast will be held on Saturday, January 15, 2022, at the American Legion Post 18, 2619 Centreville Road, Centreville, MD, 21617 from 1pm – 4pm. **SUBJECT TO CHANGE**
There will be no interment.
