Margaret L Jones died at Anne Arundel Medical Ctr. on Tuesday, December 13, 2017. She was 91. Margaret passed peacefully surrounded by her son, Gary, daughter-in-law Heather Benton and her grandchildren, twins, Jamison and Sienna.

Born May 28, 1926 in Rockford, Il., a Minneapolis resident for over six decades, Margaret recently joined her son Gary established in Upper Marlboro, MD. A true pioneer, an activist, a scholar, a philanthropist, and a champion of Women’s Rights, Margaret occupied the functions of: teacher of Speech and English at MPLS Community College, aide to the late former Mayor Hofstead, director of District 8 Planning Council, andadvocate for young unwed women at the MPLS Dept. of Health. She also served as a Commissioner for the MPLS Convention and Visitors Ctr. Former President of the National Council of Negro Women, MPLS Ch. and a founding member of the NAACP MPLS Ch., Margaret marched with Dr. Martin Luther King. Strong Advocate of Women and Youth’s Education, her main goal and purpose in life was to help anyone in need and to bring meaning to their lives. After retiring, Margaret served asmember of the Unitarian Society, Board member of Project for Pride and Living and political activist fighting for the rights of others. 

Surviving relatives include Gary Benton, son, Heather Benton, daughter in law, Jamison and Sienna, grandchildren, CharriseStaten and Stacy Herron of Rockford, IL, nieces and their children.

A Celebration of Life was held in Upper Marlboro, MD on December 16th, 2017. A future Celebration of Life Ceremony is scheduled in Minneapolis in the spring of 2018. Date and Time TBD.
